Enjoy New Food and Warm Hospitality: The Festival del Cuy Returns to Nulti

For the sixth consecutive year, the community of El Tablón in the Nulti parish is preparing to open its doors to the wider Azuayan public for an event that is much more than a festival—it is a declaration. The 6th Festival del Cuy is Nulti's annual invitation to the people of Cuenca and the surrounding province to discover a place rich in culinary tradition and vibrant culture.

This isn't just a fair; it's a showcase designed to make the parish known for its genuine hospitality and, most importantly, for its exceptional food. The event, taking place on Sunday, August 24, 2025, from 8:00 AM onwards, is a deliberate effort to put Nulti on the map as a go-to destination for authentic, local flavors.

Tradition on a Plate: The Nulti Difference

At the heart of the festival is the cuy, a staple of Ecuadorian cuisine, but here it is prepared with a distinctive difference. The cuy raised in Nulti are fed on a diet of organic grass and herbs, without the use of commercial feed, giving the meat a unique and unforgettable flavor.

But the culinary journey doesn't stop there.

Attendees can also savor the famous Pan de Nulti (Nulti bread), along with humitas, various styles of potatoes, and a wide array of other local delights. The fair is a feast for the senses, a direct experience of the agricultural and gastronomic heritage that Nulti is so proud to share.

More Than Just Food: A Day of Culture and Community

While the food is the main draw, the festival is packed with activities that celebrate local culture and community spirit. The day kicks off with a 7K race in honor of Mr. Iván Cajamarca, an event that encourages health and community integration. This is followed by a series of truly unique events:

  • The Best Dressed Cuy Contest: A quirky and beloved tradition that adds a touch of humor and creativity.

  • The Biggest Cuy Contest: A competition that highlights the quality of the local product.

  • The Cuy Race: A thrilling and unexpected event that is sure to draw a crowd.

Throughout the day, visitors can also enjoy traditional games like the Palo Encebado, as well as a rich artistic and cultural program. The stage will feature performances by "El Hombre Voz" (Santiago Illescas) and "Dúo Sentimiento," along with traditional dance presentations.

When you're looking for a weekend activity, how interested are you in attending events in the smaller parishes surrounding Cuenca?

The 7K race will have limited spots, and if you are interested in participating, the official Facebook page of the Nulti parish has posted a handful of phone numbers in order to register: 0986991229, 0979388776 and 0968083791 (make sure you speak Spanish or you have someone to translate for you if you call). The prices for registering are not high: $5 USD adults, $3 USD children and $3 USD handicapped individuals.

To make the trip easy, a simple journey via Bus Line #28 will take you directly to El Tablón, where the bus makes its final stop and turn.

The Festival del Cuy is not just a one-day event; it is Nulti's way of building a reputation, one delicious bite and one shared experience at a time. It's a testament to the power of food and culture to bring people together and to put a community on the map
